2012 Kawasaki Ninja 1000RR

When the Ninja 1000 debuted last year, Kawasaki regained a stronghold on the open class of comfortable sportbikes.
The Ninja 1000, which featured the frame and engine of its naked-brother, the Z1000, but arrived with full sportbike fairings, was immediately praised by the media. This helped propel the Ninja 1000 to the top-selling list at dealerships across the nation.
Much of the praise came from the do-it-all streetbike's rideability paired with race-bike technology. And for 2012, there will likely be more praise - not much has changed on the Ninja 1000, which is available with optional ABS.
Kawasaki says "Here's a sportbike that delivers an aesthetic uppercut the instant you lay eyes on it - and then follows up the punch with brilliant all-around performance you'll quickly learn to love."
Kawasaki's formula for the Ninja 1000 is simple - take the already comfortable and powerful chassis/engine of the Z1000, and add some stylish bodywork. That's it. And the resulting product is a machine that is capable of any type of sport riding.
And the Z1000 was designed with ZX-10R aspects in mind. The 1043cc DOHC inline-four features 16 valves and a long stroke, which helps provide instant power. The motor that pushes over 100 horsepower utilizes electronic fuel injection (38mm Keihin downdraft throttle bodies) hooked to an advanced ECU, oval sub throttles and a cool-air intake for smooth throttle response. All this is hooked to a six-speed transmission optimally geared for real world riding.
Kawasaki says "but this engine's magic is more about flexible and easy-to-use oomph than simply peak horsepower numbers. This dead-reliable inline-four produces the sort of power that launches you out of corners and away from stops in a way that'll keep you entertained - and your riding buddies impressed - for years to come. At seemingly every rpm level, the Ninja 1000 engine produces smooth, instant-on thrust many hardcore sportbikes simply can't match."
This smooth power is transmitted smoothly to the rider due to a balance shaft driven off the crankshaft that reduces vibration. The 2012 Ninja 1000 also features a stylish 4-into-2 catalyzer-equipped exhaust system, which provides a "pleasing growl without being overly loud" and reduces emissions.
The Ninja 1000's lightweight aluminum frame is similar to Kawasaki's famed liter bike, the ZX-10R. The frame cradles the engine from above, and bolts to the motor solidly in three spots, with the final mount rubber-backed for added vibration isolation and torisonal rigidity.
The 2012 Ninja 1000 features a fully adjustable, 41mm inverted fork with a preload- and rebound-adjustable single-shock system in back, "the ideal scenario for dialing in the perfect settings for your weight and riding style."
Kawasaki says "the single-shock system features a damper mounted nearly horizontally above the swingarm for optimal mass centralization and heat resistance."
The Ninja 1000's chassis rolls on lightweight six-spoke supersport rims, which are the latest in lightweight production technology.
And when it's time to apply the brakes, the 2012 Ninja 1000 uses race-spec brakes - 300mm petal-type rotors up front squeezed by ultra-rigid radially mounted calipers fed hydraulic pressure by an equally race-spec radial pump master cylinder. Out back is a single 250mm petal-type disc. And the 2012 Ninja 1000 is offered with ABS as an option.
As for styling, the Ninja 1000's fairings were designed with the spirit of the ZX-6R and ZX-10R in mind. It also features a manually adjustable 3-positon windscreen, faired front turn signals, a ZX-6R-spec front fender, a stylish tail-section and a full-featured instrument panel right off the Ninja ZX-6R with custom graphics.
The comfortable ergonomics on the Ninja 1000 can be attributed to high handlebars and low foot pegs, which helps achieve pleasurable hours in the saddle.
For 2012, Kawasaki offers the bike in two color combinations - candy lime green/ebony, and metallic black/grey. And if touring's in mind, Kawasaki offeres many accessories, including hard saddebags, a top case and heated grips.
The formula used to design the Ninja 1000 helped Kawasaki develop the ultimate everyday sportbike. Whether the rider wants to take on the twisties, commute or go on weekend tour, the Kawasaki Ninja 1000 will tackle the task at hand.
And the best part? It's all offered under $11,200 (without ABS).

 2012 Honda CBR 1000RR

Over the years the latest generation CBR1000RR has proven to be one of the best liter bikes we have tested at MotorcycleUSA.com, but knowing this is the 20th Anniversary of the original CBR900RR we were a little disappointed not to see more significant upgrades on Honda’s flagship sportbike. In our 2011 Superbike Smackdown the 1000RR finished runner-up to only the mighty BMW S1000R. It held off the challenge from Kawasaki, Suzuki, KTM and Yamaha with one of the oldest designs in the class and a 150-horsepower engine with no traction control or variable engine mapping. Sure, it handles great, is very rider friendly and looks decent enough, if not a little subdued.

So, it would seem that addressing the dearth of power or technological gadgets might be on the table for the anniversary edition; instead, Honda opted to simply sharpen the tip of its spear. In these tough economic times, who can blame Big Red for taking the conservative approach? Instead of bitching about what we didn’t get, let’s take a look at what we did get.

Starting with the chassis, the 2012 Honda CBR1000RR now utilizes Big Piston Fork technology, complemented by Honda’s “Balance-Free Rear Shock.” Exactly what the new configuration brings to the table is being kept under wraps
2012 Honda CBR1000RR
Most of the CBR's revisions are targeted toward its chassis with Big Piston Fork technology being added along with Honda's newly configured Balance-Free rear shock.
until the upcoming press introduction of the new model. Stay tuned for a technical explanation of Balance-Free in the coming months. The CBR1000RR was never in contention for the class horsepower title, but the motorcycle has always been strong in the real world and is rider-friendly on the track thanks to its strong bottom-end and midrange-biased power delivery.

It doesn’t appear anything was done to the engine so we expect the new CBR to still churn out somewhere in the neighborhood of 153-horsepower and 78 lb-ft. of torque which keeps it right in the middle of the pack. What Honda has done historically is used an excellent chassis, confidence-inspiring handling and light weight to its advantage on both the street the track.

In our 2011 track test, the CBR1000RR won the coveted Superpole during our timed and controlled on-track session at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway. AMA Superbike racer Steve Rapp edged out the BMW and Kawasaki to give the Honda top billing and the right to retain the coveted Superpole Cup for the third-consecutive year. Now, with revised suspension components we have to expect the CBR will handle even better, which will make it a more formidable opponent come testing time.

2012 Honda CBR1000RR
The 2012 CBR includes styling updates to give it a more aggressive look, particularly around the headlamps.
Where the most conspicuous changes to the 2012 CBR1000RR come into play is in the styling department. New, aggressive bodywork - particularly the front cowling, combined with new 12-spoke wheels, gives the Honda a sporty facelift. The front fairing, especially around the headlamps, has been received with mixed reviews from the public when the bike first broke cover in Japan. You cannot argue that the new look gives the CBR an anime-quality that some riders seem to love or hate. The side panels leave much more of the engine cases exposed and have a distinct teardrop look that helps distinguish this model form the previous version. The dash appears to be revised as well, with a new multi-function racing-style LCD dash that replaces the more traditional unit found on the ’11 model.

The CBR1000RR continues to be offered as a C-ABS version, but significant upgrades like traction control, which now BMW, Kawasaki and Yamaha all offer, eluded the Honda this time around. With a base MSRP of $13,800 or $14,800 for the C-ABS model, the 2012 Honda CBR1000RR is only $400 more than last year’s bike. Plus, the Pearl White/Blue/Red version really stands out compared to the basic red or black schemes.

Bodywork: The new Fireblade bodywork as its seen here is much more aggressive in appearance with the dual reflector beam head lamps similar in shape but more sinister than the last generation. The cowling is also more wild with its lightning-bolt shaped air intakes the most conspicuous change. It seems Honda has made an effort to make the CBR frontal area less-stubby and more angular (Something that has worked well for Suzuki and now BMW) in recent years. After that the body kit appears to have received only slight modifications, including poweder coated black frame and swing-arm.

Dash: A new information system features a large, LCD-style dashboard with digital tach running horizontally across the top, large speedo in the center, lap-timer, gear position indicator, engine temp, clock, trip meters and a series of shift-indicator lights across the upper edge of the dash frame.

Suspension/Brakes: The huge fork caps visible at the top of the triple-clamp appear to be Showa Big Piston Fork technology. This makes sense as Kawasaki and Suzuki have gone this route on their sportbikes the last two years. Honda has used the Unit Pro-Link layout for the rear suspension and this appears to be a variation on that same design. Radial-mount 4-piston Tokico calipers and maybe larger rotors round out this area.

Wheels: Twelve-spoke GP-style wheels replace the old three-spoke hoops found on the 2011 CBR1000RR. Honda has made it a point to offer ultra-light wheels on the CBR line-up the past few years so we expect the new wheels to possibly be even lighter.

Not so obvious changes: We expect Honda to maintain its mid-pack position in terms of outright power. It’s unlikely that we will see the 2012 CBR1000RR challenge the class horsepower leading S1000RR and ZX-10R. The Honda way seems to be to build bikes with gobs of usable low-end and mid-range power surrounded by an excellent chassis. Odds are that’s what we will get here too.

Electronics: Rumor has it that there will be a fully-loaded 2012 CBR1000RR with ABS and an engine management system that would surely include traction control and variable mapping.

 Auto Expo 2012 - CBR 150R

Surprise surprise! Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Ltd (HMSI) has pulled a fast one on unsuspecting Indian motorcycle enthusiasts! The motorcycle giant has launched the CBR 150R in the country and it has a spec sheet that's hotter than a blasting furnace! The CBR 150R produces 18 bhp@10,500 rpm and 1.28 kgm@7500 rpm from its 150cc DOHC single-cylinder mill which employs liquid cooling and fuel-injection too!

Bodywork is largely identical to that of the CBR 250R, which means there's the dual-layered fairing, a stubby exhaust and a Y shaped headlight. Also included in the features list are digital meters, front and rear disc brakes (no mention of ABS - we think they'll give it a miss on the 150R), tubeless tyres and a monoshock at the rear!

It sports a twin tubular frame and since it's bound to be lighter than the CBR 250R, we expect it to be a much more agile handler than the latter. The CBR 150R will be available in two variants - Standard and Deluxe. The Standard can be had in two shades, Black and Red, both set against Pearl Sunbeam White while the Deluxe sports additional sporty decals and two colours - Candy Palm Green and Vibrant Orange, both set against Pearl Sunbeam White.

The specification sheet and features list of the CBR 150R definitely look far superior to that of the Yamaha R15 V2.0 and how it is priced remains to be seen. Although Honda, in its press release has mentioned 'value for money that exceeds customers' expectations'. Amen to that!

Alongside the CBR 150R launch, HMSI also unveiled a new paint scheme for the CBR 250R - Pearl Heron Blue - which is a typical Honda white-blue-red combination as seen on many iconic Honda motorcycles. Can't wait to get our hands on both! Watch this space for more..
